Egg drills
(Jeweler's finishing burs)
Stock number BUR-414.30
Wait, ... don't call us, ... read on!
These have the best pointed-flame shape.
Carbide dental burs have changed over time
and no longer have the right shape.

Finishing burs, which have many fine blades,
provide the best cutting action for most egg
drilling.  You might want a set of standard type
burs as well. Standard burs have fewer blades
for faster material removal, but be careful, it's
all too easy to damage an egg with them. When
twisted with finger power, standard burs make a
scallop-edged hole which you will need to
smooth out with a finishing bur.

These have the best (of what's available) shank
diameter and shank length.

This set has a good range of head diameters.

This set is made of vanadium steel, so they will
rust.  (Well, we can't have everything.)  Burs with
the all the specification we want are no longer
available in tungsten carbide. I did a ton of research,
go ahead and look but I am positive you won't find
any, ... unless they are antiques.
You must take a little extra care of vanadium steel
egg drills. After use, clean them with detergent in an
ultrasonic cleaner, rinse well, and submerge in a
light oil likeWD-40. Drain the oil off on a paper
towel and store in a dry place. Or just leave them
under oil.
Note: When eggshell paste (eggshell dust + water)
hardens deep in the recesses between the bur blades,
cutting efficiency is greatly reduced. Get the junk out
of there before it hardens.  An ultrasonic cleaner is
the best way I have found to do it.  I forgot where
I got my Branson B200.
Here's one of many suppliers

Pin vise
Available anywhere, but I do not recommend usng one.
To get a better grip on the larger diameter egg
drills I wrapped a piece of duct tape around the
shanks. It's much too easy to damage eggs if you
use a pin vise to hold the drills.

There is no advantage in my getting these drills for
you. Shor International is the only place I found for
a set of the right thing and they are not expensive!

Depending on your situation, you might consider
buying several sets. Who knows, in a couple of
years the supplier may be gone, or the
manufacturer may quit making them.
